Where to Eat
For a town of its size, Helena has some
excellent restaurants. Here are the one's that should not be missed:
-
Emiliano's
This restaurant takes its name from Emiliano Zapata, the Mexican
revolutionary and its food can be as fiery as its namesake's
politics. The food here is excellent and it rivals any you might
find in a Mexican restaurant in a big city in the Southwest part of the country. Portions
are big and well worth the $5-8 price. Try the burros or
fajitas and be sure to order a cold pint of Dos Equis to wash it down
with. The waiting space (its more of a hall than a room) is tiny
and can make waiting uncomfortable if there is a long wait - which
there often is. One final warning - the green sauce is tear
forming hot and the red sauce is not much milder.
- The Windbag Saloon
The Windbag occupies a building that was once a brothel (actually
not that long ago) and the warm and friendly vibes are still
around. This restaurant falls into the category of
"western" cuisine: gourmet burgers, steak, fresh
fish. All dishes are large, filling, and classy. Try the Big
Dorthy , to find out what a real hamburger should taste like. Be sure
to order it with a side of the french fries, which is basically a
potato cut into 10 thick fries. Prices range from $8-16 dollars.
- No Sweat Cafe
This little cafe is still true to its Montana hippy roots. A
sign on the door says "No Guns or Cell Phones."
The No Sweat primarily serves breakfast and lunch foods, which range
from great egg scrambles to brown rice and vegetables.. Try the Tibetan
Toad for a great combination of eggs, sprouts, sausage, and
garlic. The coffee is excellent, there is a lot of it, and the
friendly atmosphere will make you want to come back often.
